PET Plastic Bottles, Advantages and Disadvantages
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a type of plastic that plays a very big part of our daily life. Their application range from packaging, fabrics, films, electronic and many more. The most common appearance of PET is as water bottles that are sold at the convenience store. In fact, you should have some of the PET bottles laying in your refrigerator.
A few advantages of PET plastic bottles are:
- High strength and crack resistance (Great glass replacement)
- Strong and lightweight (Highly efficient for transport)
- Good gas and moisture barrier properties
- Comes in clear and transparent appearance
- Excellent resistance to alcohol, oils, grease and weak acids
- Food safe (PET does not react with water or food)
- 100% Recyclable (Refer to recycling code No. 1 that can be found at the bottom of the bottle)
The disadvantages of plastic bottles made by PET are:
- Affected by boiling water
- Weak resistance towards alkalis and strong acids
- Poor burning behavior
- Changes shape / melt at high temperature (>60°C)
PET Plastic Bottles
As a SME, our productions were focused on a few type of PET plastic bottles with different volume. One thing to understand is the weight of preform used and the structure of the bottle.
a. Weight of preform
Preform comes in various weights. Depending on the volume of the bottles, the preform weights used differ as well. This is because for higher volume, we will need to use heavier preform to maintain the thickness of the bottle. Otherwise, the bottle will be very thin and crumpled easily. Below is the list of bottles produced with the preforms.

b. Structure of bottle
You may have noticed and wondered why we used 30g preform for 1500ml and 35g preform for 500ml (Round Flat). The reason behind this is the structure of the bottles.

From the 2 product diagram, 500ml has flat surface without any curves. Meanwhile, 1500ml has consistent rings around the body of the bottle. Such rings actually provide support and increase the strength of the bottle. Therefore, 1500ml require preform with lower weight compared to 500ml to obtain similar hardness.
c. Production of PET plastic bottles
- Heat preform near to melting point (~70 to 90°C).
- Place the heated preform into desired mold.
- Cold compressed air will blow the preform at high pressure, causing the preform to expand and molded according to the mold. During this process, the mold is being kept at low temperature, ensuring instant temperature reduction for the expanded preform (which is now PET plastic bottle). Such instant cooling will solidify and shape the plastic bottle.
- Proceed to the collection area.
